A terrific bowling effort from the Indian spinners on Day 1 helped the team to restrict New Zealand to 259 in its first innings. Returning to the Test side after three and a half years, Washington Sundar bagged career-best figures, 7/59. While Ravichandran Ashwin provided early breakthroughs by sending the top three batters back to the pavilion, Washington Sundar claimed the remaining 7 wickets. 

On a pitch favoring spinners, Devon Conway (76) and Rachin Ravindra (65) played sensible knocks to provide a decent total on the board. Both the batters continued their brilliant form and handled Indian bowlers well. Ashwin and Sundar from both ends troubled Kiwi batters. However, Rohit Sharma-led India failed to take advantage of the condition and settled at 156 in their first innings. Mitchell Santner grabbed 7 wickets and helped New Zealand achieve a lead of 103 runs. The Kiwi left-arm spinner achieved his career-best figures and took his team to a safe position.
